Talented international students applying for the Excellence Scholarship in the Netherlands from outside the European Economic Area (EEA, which includes the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway) who want to pursue a master’s degree at Utrecht University are eligible to apply for the very selective Utrecht Excellence Scholarship (UES).

Benefits of Excellence Scholarship in the Netherlands
The Utrecht Excellence Scholarship may be given out in the following ways:
- The tuition fee
- The tuition fee plus the income required for one year is linked to a residence permit for study as determined by the IND (Immigration and Naturalisation Service).
- The scholarship can be renewed for the second year of a two-year master’s program.
How to apply
- Non-EU/EEA students will be able to apply for one Utrecht Excellence Scholarship starting on November 1, 2024, provided they have applied (or applied) for a UES-eligible master’s program before the specified deadline.
- The UES application or applications will be shown on your OSIRIS Online Application account dashboard.
- To apply for a program, click View/Edit for the UES connected (associated procedure).
- Then, upload the required documentation proving you were in the top 10% of your class, complete the questions, and submit your application.
Eligibility Criteria
The following requirements must be fulfilled to be eligible for a Utrecht Excellence Scholarship in the Netherlands:
- You have to place in the top ten percent of your graduating class.
- You must not be a citizen of the EU or EEA and be ineligible for a Dutch study grant and financial assistance.
- Your bachelor’s degree and/or secondary education must have been earned outside of the Netherlands.
- You have to have submitted an application for an international master’s program that begins on September 1,
- Not every program takes part. Please see if the Utrecht Excellence Scholarship is listed as a scholarship opportunity under the Master’s program > Tuition fees and financial support.
- We recommend you apply as soon as possible because our application portal is open for a long time.
- Applying ahead of time gives you adequate time for your documents to be examined and, if needed, corrected or missing information added.
Deadline
To be eligible for the award, prospective students must apply by February 1st at 23:59 CET. At this point, the application portal will close. Only after the deadline will the selection process begin. Our goal is to release the findings by the middle of April.
Note: Please be aware that any inaccurate or missing information cannot be corrected or added to your application if it is submitted between January 27 and February 1. For a seamless review process, we advise submitting as soon as feasible.
